Encryption protects the contents against an unwanted party reading it. Digital signatures make sure that it was not modified and comes from a specific sender.

Gpg4win supports both relevant cryptography standards, OpenPGP and S/MIME (X.509). Gpg4win is the official GnuPG distribution for Windows and is maintained by the developers of GnuPG. Gpg4win and the software included with Gpg4win are Free Software (Open Source; among other things free of charge for all commercial and non-commercial purposes).

Source: http://gpg4win.org/about.html

You can download Gpg4win software from download page: http://gpg4win.org/download.html
As for today Gpg4win 2.1.0 contains:

GnuPG 2.0.17

Kleopatra 2.1.0 (2011-02-04)

GPA 0.9.1-svn1024

GpgOL 1.1.2

GpgEX 0.9.7

Claws Mail 3.7.8cvs47

Kompendium (de) 3.0.0

Compendium (en) 3.0.0-beta1

You can also download Lite version of Gpg4win, without Kleopatra and manuals, but I will use and refer to the full version.

It is recommended to verify the integrity of your Gpg4win package, but in Microsoft Windows you do not have built-in tool for this purpose. You can install third-party tool for this, like HashCheck, HashTab or other. I think I will write separate article about hash verification. For now you can click twice on gpg4win-ver.exe to install Gpg4win. File has verified issuer: Intevation GmbH, so you can install it safely.
With a default installation options (which I used), at the end of the setup wizard, appears the window where you can define trustable root certificates for S/MIME. I skipped this option because S/MIME is not the focus of this article. So, install them as described in this window or check the box “Root certificate defined or skip configuration” as I have done and click “Next >” to finish setup.
Now you can open Windows shell prompt (left Win key, cmd ) and check gpg version and alghoritms (my output below /Windows 7 Professional, Polish version/).

C:\\Users\\DrFugazi>gpg --version
gpg (GnuPG) 2.0.17 (Gpg4win 2.1.0)
libgcrypt 1.4.6
Copyright (C) 2011 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>
This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it.
There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law.

Home: C:/Users/DrFugazi/AppData/Roaming/gnupg
Obs│ugiwane algorytmy:
Asymetryczne: RSA, ELG, DSA
Symetryczne: 3DES, CAST5, BLOWFISH, AES, AES192, AES256, TWOFISH, CAMELLIA128,
             CAMELLIA192, CAMELLIA256
Skrˇtˇw: MD5, SHA1, RIPEMD160, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, SHA224
Kompresji: Nieskompresowany, ZIP, ZLIB, BZIP2

C:\\Users\\DrFugazi>

Now you should generate your private/public keypair with CLI, Kleopatra or other utility.

Gpg4win (GNU Privacy Guard for Windows) is an encryption software for files and emails.

What is Gpg4win?

Gpg4win enables users to securely transport emails and files with the help of encryption and digital signatures.
